Blackjack rules

One of Blackjack's best qualities is that it is extremely player-friendly. By understanding the rules, you can dramatically increase your chances of winning. The house has little to no edge against a knowledgeable player.

Online blackjack games typically use one or two standard decks, though shoe games use four to six decks. Some tables seat up to seven players, while others are simply solo tables with the player and the dealer. The basic rules of blackjack are the same, however, regardless of how many players or how many decks are used. The game begins with each player wagering a certain amount.

The dealer deals two cards to everyone seated at the table, including himself. One card is visible to everyone at the table and the other card is not. The goal of blackjack is to amass the highest hand total without going over 21. Numbered cards are worth the number shown, court cards are worth ten, and you may choose for an ace to be worth one or eleven.

If your initial two-card hand has a value of 21 (an Ace plus a court card), you receive 3:2 payment on your initial wager. If not, you may choose to:

* Hit - Receive an additional card to add to your hand value. This card is visible to everyone at the table.
* Stand - Receive no additional cards and keep the same hand value.
* Double Down - Double your initial wager and receive an additional card to add to your hand value.
* Split - If you are dealt a pair, you can split your hand into two separate hands. Put an additional amount into the pot equal to your original wager to accompany each hand. You may then hit or stand for each of your two hands as the turn goes around.
* Surrender - Only some casinos offer the chance to surrender in the event of what you perceive to be a poor or unwinnable hand. When you surrender, you give half your initial bet to the house and keep the other half, effectively cutting your losses.
* Take Insurance - If you believe that the dealer has been dealt a natural 21, you may want to take insurance. By doing so, you place an initial amount into the pot, but you will not lose it or your initial bet if the dealer has a natural 21. You lose both, however, if this is not the case.

You win at blackjack by knowing which of the above actions to take at any given moment. Strategy consists of paying attention to the game and knowing which actions will most likely lead to victory. The dealer is generally automated and only follows house rules. Players make choices based on what cards they have and what they think the dealer has.

If you are serious about blackjack, you must make use of basic strategy. This consists of a set of mathematically-proven rules to increase your chances of winning. Depending on what you have been dealt, only one of the above actions has the best chances for victory. The best blackjack players have strategy charts consisting of how to play each hand for each variant of blackjack. Once you have practiced your basic strategy, you can start making money. Keep in mind, however, that strategies differ depending on how many decks are being used.

Blackjack Variations

These rules for blackjack generally apply for most variants of the game. However, there are many different types of blackjack. Each one has its own logic and many have different house rules as well. For more information, visit our Blackjack Variations section.
